Michigan State University is a leader among schools in the nation that provide for students who have special educational needs. MSU, particularly the Office of Programs for Handicapper Students (OPHS), can provide students with certain aids that they may require to have an equally accessible education.
For instance, mobility needs such as rides to class for handicapper students are made available through OPHS and Handicapper Transportation.
Students who are visually, hearing or otherwise impaired can also receive special help. some of this help includes student note takers, interpreters, speech and auditory specialists and people within the office who handle transportation needs.
If you are or know of a fellow student who may require assistance, I encourage you to register with the office, which is located in 120 Bessey Hall on campus. The telephone number is 353-9642.
Once a student makes an appointment, s/he is processed, registered and therefore able to receive aid for her/his specific handicap.
A student registered with the office also receives the Harbinger, the monthly newsletter published by OPHS. The Harbinger provides news concerning handicapper students, campus or club opportunities and functions, and allows for student voices to be heard regarding problems, ideas or whatever students have on their minds.
I would once again encourage you to call OPHS if you or someone you know requires handicapper assistance. As a handicapper student, the office has helped me with many mobility problems. It has also provided me with advice on certain issues, and it has given me a forum through which to speak to other people, particularly handicapper students, from a first-person point of view.
The first step begins with you. Call or come into the office and get registered. The Office of Programs for Handicapper Students will provide you with the appropriate assistance for your specific needs.
