The Office of Programs for Handicapper Students prepares and distributes a survey annually to the students we serve in order to ascertain what we are doing well and in what areas we need to improve.
Results of the spring survey show many areas of competence and some areas that you felt needed improvement.
Many of you (38%) indicated you are not aware of the assistive technology available at the office for student use. You will see that we have prepared an introductory article for this issue and will continue to update you on new computers and other technology.
Several of you (33%) also let us know that you were unsure of how to access the services OPHS offers. The easiest way is to contact the office. Speak with your specialist, or if you don't have a specialist, choose one to meet with regularly. Another way to learn about what we offer is to read the monthly Harbinger.
You felt our specialists were sensitive to handicappers (83%) and that classroom accommodations, if needed, were handled appropriately (59%). Eighty-one percent of you felt our services were better than average, although eight percent of you felt there was still room for improvement.
We intend to continue to improve in our service. One of our goals is to increase the student participation in office activities. These include support group meetings, articles in the Harbinger and use of the "Tech Room." We invite you to call or drop by with or without an appointment to learn more about what we offer.
Students interested in forming or joining a support group facilitated by OPHS staff should call the office at V/TTY (517) 353-9642. Many campus groups also offer support groups and are identified on page three of the Harbinger each month.
Many of you indicated in the annual survey that you wanted to see fewer staff articles in the Harbinger and more about students.
I am happy to oblige, but I need your help. I don't know all of you, nor do I know who is doing outstanding things on and off campus and could serve as an example for us all. Therefore, I need your help in identifying students to profile in upcoming articles.
Additionally, if you know of events that are or will be taking place that should be publicized and/or written about, please let me know. I can only print what I am cognizant of, and necessarily that is limited.
Please nominate OPHS students who should be and are willing to be profiled in the Harbinger. These can be freshmen to graduate level students at MSU. Contact Kim at OPHS, V/TTY (517) 353-9642.
