Michigan has long been a key state on the road to the White House. In 1996, people with disabilities will have the opportunity to actively experience the President's message. The President's Committee on Employment of People with Disabilities is coming to Detroit to hold its 49th annual conference from May 22-24.
The President's Committee was created by Congress and is responsible for increasing employment opportunities for people with disabilities. Over the two and a half day conference, workshops and general sessions dealing with employemnt will be incorporating the 1996 theme: Investing in Abilities.
The annual conference draws people with disabilities, representing organizations and dignitaries from all over the world. The conference had a peak attendance in 1991, when approximately 8,500 people attended. The conference also has approximately 700 displays, exhibits and employers from around the United States.
This year, the Developmental Disabilities Council is offering a limited number of scholarships for people with disabilities.
