Phones turn words to mush when cranked up for people with serious hearing impairments. So do TVs and personal stereos. But a new device called HATIS plugs into electronic devices to transmit distortion-free sound into any telecoil-style hearing aid. A microphone can amplify conversations as well. The inventors say HATIS could help 400 million people worldwide. HATIS debued Sept. 15 on QVC, the TV shopping network.
