This article is the first of an ongoing series I have been asked to write for The Harbinger. Some of you may have read the articles I have written for this newsletter in past semesters. Unfortunately I am unable to join you this term at Michigan State. I am having some medical problems with my joints, primarily my hips, as a result of previous cancer treatments.
I was treated for a brain tumor in 1994 and 1995. During the course of chemotherapy, I received a high dose of steroids to suppress the effects of the chemotherapy on the human body. Though they served their purpose, they caused a condition that I now have called avascular necrosis. This means that there is a lack of oxygen and blood flow to the bones in my joints. Tests have shown that I have this condition in my hips, my shoulders and possibly my knees. It is painful to walk, as my hips will suddenly give out and the weight of my body will fall to my knees. Currently I require a few more tests, but a tentative date for surgery has been set.
In addition, I learned very recently that during the course of one of my tests, an abnormality was found inside my pelvic bone. There are several possibilities as to what it could be, including a tumor. When I heard this, I must say I was more than frightened. But until it is discovered, though a biopsy, what exactly this "abnormality" is, it only makes sense to remain calm about the situation. These are the things keeping me out of school for the time being. The next article I write will more than likely be post-surgical. I will report the things that have taken place and will be taking place, as well as share with you my feelings about my experiences.
I hope you will find these articles interesting and maybe even helpful. If you would like to correspond with me, please write to:
