Legislation concerning use of the terms "handicapper" and "handicapped" still awaits review by the House Committee on Constitutional and Civil Rights. Members of the Legislature have been on break and will take up Senate Bills 352-355 when they return Sept. 23. SB 352-355 cleared the Senate last May 37-0.
In other legislative news, members in the House will also consider a bill to eliminate the tax on textbooks. HB 4419, prime sponsored by Rep. Vera Rison, D- Mt. Morris, would save MSU students an estimated $1 million each year on texbook purchases. Rison said the bill was approved in July by the House Tax Policy Committee, and may be considered for a full vote of the House later this month.
