The United States Congress passed a bill on September 17, 2008 to clarify who qualifies for protection under the Americans with Disabilities Act. With Congressional approval the bill went to President Bush for his signature or veto. The White House reported that on September 25th, 2008, President Bush signed the bill, just as his father signed the original Americans with Disabilities Act in 1990. The bill that passed the Congress amends the ADA to reestablish the definition of ‘disability' and reverses recent court-determined trends that have dramatically restricted the definition. The bill says the following: the definition of disability in this act \shall be construed in favor of broad coverage." As a result, more individuals with disabilities will be covered under the ADA.
As the bill becomes law, the RCPD will review our procedures to ensure compliance with the change. RCPD welcomes students, employees and visitors to fully participate in the wide ranging opportunities at MSU.
