To kick off the 2005-06 school year the RCPD held its annual welcome orientation workshop, WOW, to help students prepare themselves for college.
Over thirty students attended this year's program, which was held at the end of August. WOW, helps to aid students in preparing themselves for classes, exams, and other situations that they will face in college.
The afternoon kicked off with a resource fair offering students to explore some of the different opportunities which Michigan State offers to help students succeed. Seventeen organizations set up booths offering a vast array of activities ranging from transportation (CATA) to health care and tutoring opportunities.
A high impact student panel followed the resource fair. Nine of RCPD's exceptional students helped lead discussions by offering new students advice for success, and opportunities for growth.
Students on the panel told their first hand understanding and testimonials about their college experience. Their stories and situations helped allow the students to feel more comfortable and ask a variety of questions. The panel took turns giving their responses.
Following the student panel representatives from a vocational rehabilitation connection spoke with the students about how they can help in finding a career. Many technical details which helped students gain more knowledge about test taking assistance and the RCPD's many available technologies were explained in later presentations.
A mad dash from the auditorium to the hall followed the presentation as staff and students made there way into line for the complementary meal. Pizza, pop, and cookies concluded another informative and influential WOW event, followed by ushers who helped lead students to more cross-campus welcome activities.
