Transportation

The Capital Area Transit Authority (CATA) offers transportation services for Michigan State University's campus, and the surrounding area. Your choice of the type of transportation service to use should be based on your specific needs.

CATA Fixed Route System

CATA and MSU have invested in the creation of fixed routes that serve the MSU campus as the most popular method of cross-campus and community travel. Ramped entrances, location announcement systems, and infrared talking signage, now compliment CATA's fixed routes. Customers are picked up and dropped off at designated bus stops along a fixed route with scheduled times. For more information regarding the 2018-19 school year, please reference the following.

Spec-Tran

If fixed CATA routes do not meet your needs, RCPD Specialists are authorized to provide CATA Spec-Tran certification, enabling persons with mobility related disabilities to access curb-to-curb services as an alternative to the traditional bus system.

To request Spec-Tran services, follow these simple steps in order:
  1. If you are not currently registered with the RCPD, log on to My Profile to initiate this and complete all questions so that we can contact you.
  2. Next, contact the RCPD for a phone interview (517) 884-1900
  3. After completing registration, RCPD will provide information on Spec-Tran passes and scheduling rides
  4. 24-48 hours after the interview contact Spec-Tran to schedule a ride

Reservations may be made by RCPD authorized MSU students and employees by calling (517) 394-2282 between 8:00 AM and 5:00 PM to schedule rides up to 14 days in advance. The Spec-Tran reservation office is open seven days a week, year-round, including holidays. You may also reserve a ride online here.

Night Owl

Between 2 am and 7 am, Night Owl service provides demand response curb-to-curb trips anywhere on the MSU campus. A bus can usually be at your curb within 20 minutes of your request. Dial (517) 432-8888 from a campus or green light phone to place your request. CATA Bus passes are accepted, and regular CATA rates apply to Night Owl Services.
