Did you know that Winston Churchill, Prime Minister of the United Kingdom and literature Nobel Prize winner, had a learning disability?

Carlson Accessible Media Program (CAMP)

Richard and Kathleen Carlson established this endowment in 2008 with gratitude for the services available to their daughter Margaret as she earned a degree in General Business at MSU. Building on their belief in the abilities of people with disabilities, they sought to increase availability of accessible educational materials. With leadership from RCPD's Media Access Specialist, this endowment will accelerate MSU advancement in a range of educational media from electronic textbooks, Braille (including scientific and mathematic), and large-print to emerging forms of online media. Visit the Accessible Textbooks and Media section of the web site for a fuller description of the efforts supported by this endowment.

Perhaps you or someone you know struggles with reading traditional print materials. Maybe you, a friend, or a family member called on RCPD services to overcome reading challenges from dyslexia, blindness, visual impairment or physical disabilities. If so, please consider joining this important effort by visiting Financial Contributions for details on how you too can make a difference, or make a gift online.

The Carlson Accessible Media Program in Action

  • RCPD displayed scientific and mathematical Braille, and computers featuring screen readers and text enlargers at Michigan's first Braille-A-Thon.
  • The production of books in alternative formats helps students like Amanda Gretka succeed.
  • The creation of this program in 2008 made a multiplicity of resources available in formats compatible with the needs of students.
  • The endowment has fostered connections with other universities through a nationally recognized accessible materials organization - Bookshare.
