Accessing the RCPD Books Database


Michigan State University provides accessible books to students with disabilities through the STAR (Samaritan Technological Advancements in Reading) database.

Remember that you must have purchased the printed book before using the textbook in alternative format.

1. Enter the STAR web address on your web browser: Books.RCPD.MSU.EDU. Students or employees registered with the RCPD may login to the STAR database using your MSU NetID and Password

2. At the "Search By Title" text box, type a word that appears in the title of your book. (such as Engineering)

3. At the search returned page, click on the title of your book if it is found. Please note the title, edition, author, year and format of the book that you choose.

4. After you select the intended book by clicking its title, a "Details for book ####" window will appear.

5. Review the information listed to find out if it is the book you are looking for. Pay specific attention to its "Status" and special "Comments" on the book.

6. If the book is what you want to request for the alternative format, click the "Request this Book" tab toward the bottom of the screen.

7. You need to agree to abide by the "Terms and Conditions" before you are able to download the book.

8. You also need to enter the information for the semester and course ID (e.g., ENG 300) that you will use the alternative format for. After entering the request information, select the "Complete Request" tab.

9. If the book is available in "Electronic Text" format, you need to select the "Download" link to download the E-text to your computer or flash drive, etc. If the book is not in electronic text format, the RCPD Media Access Specialist will respond to your request by e-mail.

10. When the "File Download" box appears, choose to save the file to the computer.

11. Create a file name, and choose the location where you would like to save the file. Finally, select "Save" in the "Save As" box.

12. Remember to log out of the STAR system when you are done, especially if you use a public computer to access the STAR system.

13. If you run into any problems accessing the STAR system, call or e-mail your RCPD Specialist, or the Media Access Specialist for assistance.
