RCPD has been a great resource during my years at State. The staff is great and the books on tape and other assistive technologies have been helpful. -Ali Faraj, Hospitality Business major |

Greetings!
As the Chronic Health Specialist, I am excited to call the RCPD my workplace "home". Similar to several of my colleagues, I am a former teacher who is now educating in a new way. In my role as a disability specialist, I am particularly interested in understanding each student's history, challenges, and strengths in order to best encourage and guide students in their navigation toward an MSU degree. Each student brings a story with unique characteristics and circumstances; the excitement of this position lies in listening to each story, asking an array of questions, and encouraging individuals to make the most of their time as a Spartan. For many students with chronic illness, this is hard work that requires frequent communication with professors, invested involvement with campus resources, and proactive management of illness along with the academic and social demands of college life.
Some work-related interests include postsecondary and adult pedagogical theory and the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning with a focus related to persons with disabilities (including the impact of Universal Design and online instruction). My background in K-12 education often informs my approach as I seek to understand the partnerships formed between various departments to improve college student learning. I have a bachelor's degree in Education (with teaching endorsements in English as a Second Language, Spanish, and Language Arts), and a Master's Degree in Education Administration/Higher, Adult, and Lifelong Education, where I focused largely on students with disabilities and Centers for Teaching and Learning. By no means could I consider myself a "techie", but I find myself increasingly fascinated by both digital storytelling and the intersection of technology with student learning.
In my free time I enjoy anything active, and love to make the most out of each season Michigan offers. Several times a week, you can find me on local hiking trails with my dog (in sun and snow!). Other days I may be playing softball, tennis, or ultimate frisbee with friends, or hanging out in a local bookshop with a good cup of coffee.
